PROFESSIONAL PERFORMANCE
JOHN T. GALEY MEMORIAL AWARD
[Established 1993]
The executive Committee of the Eastern Section of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists (ES-AAPG) established the John T. Galey Memorial Award in 1993. This was done in memory of its first president, John T. Galey, whose vision and dedication led to the establishment of the Section and provided continuous impetus over the years to its growth and prosperity.
The John T. Galey Memorial Award, the highest honor bestowed by the Section, is intended to recognize distinguished geoscientists whose outstanding accomplishments and contributions to our profession and its application have been directed toward the betterment of society - the select genre of geoscientists epitomized by John T. Galey.
The Galey Award consists of both a medal and a unique, mounted geological specimen. Recipients of the Award are further honored by presenting the John T. Galey memorial Address to the opening session of our Annual Meeting. The topic is entirely of their choosing.
HONORARY MEMBERSHIP
[Established 1982]
Honorary Membership is the second highest honor bestowed upon members who have distinguished themselves by their service and devotion to the science and profession of geology and the Eastern Section of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists. As such, a maximum of one (1) such award is normally bestowed annually. Under exceptional circumstances a maximum of two (2) awards may be bestowed in a given year.
DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD
[Established 1975]
The Distinguished Service Award is presented to members who have distinguished themselves in service to the Eastern Section of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists. While the maximum number of annual recipients is not strictly limited, the number of recipients should normally not exceed two (2) per year. Under exceptional circumstances a maximum of three (3) awards may be bestowed in a given year.
GEORGE V. COHEE PUBLIC SERVICE AWARD
[Established 1985]
The Public Service Award is presented annually to geologists in recognition of distinguished service and achievement in public affairs. It is granted to recognize the contributions of geologists to the public and encourage geologists to take a more active part in public affairs. It requires a level of involvement and achievement in public affairs higher than what would be normally expected of the recipients position or the nature of the type of employment, e.g. government employees. Although the recipient must be a geologist, membership in the Eastern Section of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists and/or national is not necessarily required. As a general rule the award should not exceed one (1) per annum.
OUTSTANDING EDUCATOR AWARD
[Established 1986]
The Outstanding Educator Award is presented in recognition of outstanding contributions to the education and training of geologists. The award may recognize outstanding research and publication as contributions to education and training of geologists as well as classroom teaching and may recognize such contributions from those outside of formal academia as well as academicians. Recipients must be geologists but need not necessarily be members of the Eastern Section of AAPG and/or national. As a general rule, the award should never exceed two (2) per annum and preferably no more than one (1).
GORDON H. WOOD, JR. MEMORIAL AWARD

DIVISION OF ENVIRONMENTAL GEOSCIENCES MERITORIOUS CONTRIBUTIONS AWARD (EASTERN SECTION)
[Established 1993]

PRESIDENTIAL AWARD
[Established 1998]
Presented only as deemed necessary in recognition of outstanding achievement not covered by other awards.
CERTIFICATE OF MERIT
[Established 1987]
Certificates of Merit are presented to members who have made an outstanding contribution(s) to the Section. However, the nature of the service performed is not of sufficient magnitude nor length to merit a Distinguished Service Award. There is no precise yearly limit on the number of these awards, but care must always be taken to keep the numbers small enough to retain its significance.
